Our energy ecosystem is evolving. An intelligent use of energy can help to solve problems of the future. Fossil fuels are gradually being replaced by increased amounts of clean, renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. Power production from wind and solar are still difficult to predict - as weather decides. There is a limit to how much uncertain production the grid can manage and some countries are close to this already. In addition we need to make use of flexible energy devices that can store power for later use. These challenges require sophisticated orchestration of the many decentralized and uncertain sources of production and available flexibility. The power grid is in a sense the world’s biggest machine. Today, controlling this machine is partly done manually. Tomorrow, the decisions will be done mainly by machines, at high frequency, in real time. By using forecasts of an uncertain future and taking optimal decisions all supported by AI. Take the challenge at HackZurich.

The rise of artificial intelligence in recent years is grounded in the success of deep learning. However, when applying these techniques to real business cases it is often much more challenging than you might think. In his talk, Rasmus will share several key learnings. Rasmus is a co-founder at Merantix, a Berlin based AI venture studio leveraging deep learning to build products in health (automating radiological workflow), automotive (testing autonomous driving systems), and finance (algorithmic trading). He obtained a PhD while studying computer science with a focus on (deep) machine learning at Oxford, Princeton and ETH Zurich. He founded HackZurich, which became the biggest hackathon in Europe, scaled a deep learning powered service to 150m users and previously interned as a product manager at Google.
